Travel Alert September 2021: New Orleans and New York Recovery From Storm

See which airlines have either issued or amended travel waivers as a result of a weather event.

At least 61 people in eight states — almost 50 of them in the northeastern United States — have died from a storm which was once a strong Category 4 hurricane; and recovery efforts continue to be under way in both New Orleans and New York.

Travel Alert September 2021: New Orleans and New York Recovery From Storm

This is a good lesson to understand that when a major hurricane “weakens” to a tropical depression, it should still be taken seriously. Fatalities and extensive damage were certainly caused as a result of Hurricane Ida along the gulf coast of the United States in Mississippi and Louisiana — especially including New Orleans — but Tropical Depression Ida resulted in more deaths and a different sort of destruction in the city of New York and other parts of the northeastern United States.

In fact, the city of New York and Westchester County were issued an official Flash Flood Emergency alert from the National Weather Service, which is the first time that has ever happened, as records were shattered pertaining to the vast amounts of precipitation which fell in one hour — with nowhere for the water to go.

Flight Waivers, Delays and Cancellations

If you are traveling to or from New Orleans or New York over the next few weeks, expect delays and cancellations of flights. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to the aftermath of this tropical weather system which may adversely affect your travel plans. Better yet, postponing or canceling your trip might be a better option — no matter which mode of travel you plan on taking.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.

Final Boarding Call

Be sure to contact your airline or transportation provider for the latest information pertaining to your travels — if they are adversely affected — and please: travel safely.

I have lived in New York for years; and I do not ever recall a weather situation such as this. The last time the greater metropolitan area of New York had to deal with a weather situation of this magnitude was during what is now known as Superstorm Sandy.

My thoughts are with anyone who is being adversely affected by the remnants of what was Hurricane Ida.
