Travel Alerts January 2019: Industrial Actions in Germany and Italy

Calls for labor strikes by some of the airline unions in Germany and Italy for several days this month — most notably, Frankfurt on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 — have been issued; and air travel has been affected.

Travel Alerts January 2019: Industrial Actions in Germany and Italy

If you are traveling to or from Frankfurt over the next couple of days, expect delays and cancellations of flights due to a strike by members of the security staff at the airport. Keep up to date on the latest information pertaining to this industrial action which may adversely affect your travel plans.

If you have a flight scheduled, your flight may be delayed or canceled — and you may be eligible for a waiver of a fee to change your itinerary.

Meanwhile, if your travels have been affected by industrial actions which have already occurred, you can change your travel plans with the fee waived.

Here are five airlines which have issued travel alerts as a result of industrial actions in Germany and Italy:

  • American Airlines has issued a travel alert for Frankfurt for Tuesday, January 15, 2019; and Thursday, January 17, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Delta Air Lines has issued travel alerts for:
    • Dusseldorf and Stuttgart for Thursday, January 10, 2019; and Wednesday, January 16, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
    • Ten airports in Italy for Friday, January 11, 2019; and Tuesday, January 15, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • United Airlines has issued a travel alert for Frankfurt for Monday, January 14, 2019 through Tuesday, January 15, 2019; and Thursday, January 17, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
  • Lufhansa has issued a travel alert for Frankfurt for Tuesday, January 15, 2019; and affected flights will be posted on Sunday, January 13, 2019 with further instructions for those passengers who are affected.
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has issued travel alerts for:
    • Dusseldorf and Stuttgart for Thursday, January 10, 2019; and Wednesday, January 16, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.
    • Ten airports in Italy for Friday, January 11, 2019; and Tuesday, January 15, 2019 is the last day on which tickets must be reissued and rebooked travel must begin.

Summary

Expect other airlines which serve Frankfurt to issue travel alerts — and travel waivers — for Tuesday, January 15, 2019 as a result of the strikes.

Although your flight may or may not be affected, if you have travel plans to, from or within Frankfurt on that day, you may want to consider changing them.
