Fly On American Airlines or One of Its Partner Airlines

You will retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum elite status through Tuesday, January 31, 2023, if you earn at least $2,000.00 Elite Qualifying Dollars on eligible airline tickets flown between Wednesday, September 1, 2021 and Friday, December 31, 2021.

The AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Executive Platinum elite status level held as of Friday, January 1, 2021 will be retained through Tuesday, January 31, 2023 if you earn $2,000.00 base Elite Qualifying Dollars on eligible flights marketed or operated by American Airlines and its elite qualifying partner airlines between Wednesday, September 1, 2021 and Friday, December 31, 2021.

This promotion does not affect the elite status of members with lifetime elite status, or the elite status of members who have already met the qualification requirements for 2022 elite status — the same or higher elite status level as such members held on Friday, January 1, 2021 — as of Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Unless specified, bonus Elite Qualifying Dollars granted in connection with other promotions do not count toward this promotion.

Spend $15,000.00 on an Eligible AAdvantage Credit Card

You will retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum elite status through Tuesday, January 31, 2023, if you spend at least $15,000 on eligible purchases with an eligible AAdvantage credit card between Thursday, July 15, 2021 and Monday, November 15, 2021.

The AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Executive Platinum elite status level held as of Friday, January 1, 2021, will be retained through Tuesday, January 31, 2023 for the primary cardholder if the member spends a minimum of $15,000.00 in United States dollars on eligible purchases made with eligible Citi / AAdvantage, AAdvantage Aviator credit cards, or AAdvantage credit cards issued outside the United States between Thursday, July 15, 2021 and Monday, November 15, 2021. This offer may not be achievable based on the assigned credit line and ability to maintain that credit line.

AAdvantage program elite status requirements

Spend on purchases may be combined across all eligible AAdvantage credit cards to reach the $15,000.00 requirement to retain AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum elite status for 2022. The elite status retention offer will not be applied to members if spending an amount less than $15,000.00. All Citi / AAdvantage, all AAdvantage Aviator, and all AAdvantage credit cards issued outside the U.S. are eligible.

Eligible purchases, defined as purchases, including those made by authorized users on your account, less credits, returns and adjustments, made with your Citi / AAdvantage, AAdvantage, Aviator credit card, and AAdvantage cards issued outside the U.S. that post as base miles to your AAdvantage account between July 15, 2021 and December 15, 2021 will count toward your qualifying spend.

For cards issued in the U.S., purchases exclude balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler’s checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions).

To determine the correct spend towards the $15,000.00, dollars spent will be calculated using the AAdvantage “base” or “spend” miles — for example, not counting bonus miles — earned and posted to your account, and then applying the mileage earn rate applicable to the type of AAdvantage card used by you to make the purchase. For example, if the credit card used has a 1:1 ratio of dollars spent to base miles earned and 100 miles were posted to your AAdvantage account, then you would be credited with $100 of spend towards the $15,000.00.

This promotion does not affect the elite status of members with lifetime elite status, or the elite status of members who have already met the qualification requirements for 2022 elite status — the same or higher elite status level as such members held on January 1, 2021 — as of June 23, 2021.

Your membership account will be updated within six weeks of completing this promotion.

In order to qualify for this offer, your credit card account must be open and in good standing at all times. If your credit card account is closed for any reason, you may no longer be eligible for this offer.

Summary

With both offers, if you are retaining Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro elite status through this promotion, you will not be eligible for 2022 elite choice rewards unless you meet the 2021 elite qualification requirements for Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro elite level status.

The ability to retain elite status as part of this promotion is a limited-time offer and is not transferable. You must be a member in good standing of the American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flier loyalty program in order to qualify for this offer. American reserves the right to modify or terminate this promotion without notice.

Temporary elite status held due to a promotion is not eligible for status retention.

American Airlines reserves the right to change the AAdvantage program and its terms and conditions at any time without notice, and to end the AAdvantage program with six months’ notice. Any such changes may affect your ability to use the awards or mileage credits that you have accumulated.

Although these are not exactly the best ways I have ever seen to retain elite status for the following year, these two ways of doing so are better than nothing.
