Watch Out for This Scam While Traveling

There is a scam that has been occurring around the world for years where a “con artist” gains the confidence of a foreign visitor by treating that visitor to dinner or a dessert, for example, while engaged in interesting conversation. The foreign visitor is then inconspicuously baited by being invited at the insistence and persuasion of the “con artist” to a highly overpriced place — such as a nightclub — and then incurs expensive purchases whose mark-ups on items or services sold can be greater than one hundred times the normal retail costs elsewhere.
