What If a Hotel Property Does Not Accept the Official Credit Card of Its Parent Lodging Company?

“I’m disappointed as I recently acquired the AMEX Aspire card and will be losing out ~50k HHonors points on my $3500 stay, the $250 resort fee credit and the bulk of the spend towards meeting the $4000 threshold for HHonors 100,000 bonus point trigger. The stay is a pre-paid rate but they haven’t charged my AMEX. Also, I already booked flights for the family etc, so cancelling is out.”

What If a Hotel Property Does Not Accept the Official Credit Card of Its Parent Lodging Company?

With an upcoming stay next month at the new Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club, Curio Collection by Hilton hotel property located in Belize, FlyerTalk member Clarkdkent was hoping to use the new Hilton Honors American Express Aspire card: “After reading a review on TripAdvisor about the hotel not accepting AMEX, I contacted the front desk and was told that they are only accepting Visa and MC at this time.”

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is one of four new or updated official cards of Hilton which was introduced back on Wednesday, November 1, 2017; and the main purpose of acquiring a card such as that one is to enjoy the benefits of being a member of the Hilton Honors frequent guest loyalty program — such as earning 14 times the Hilton Honors bonus points per dollar spent at hotel and resort properties which are part of the Hilton portfolio worldwide and earning 100,000 Hilton Honors points after spending $4,000.00 during the first three months…

…but what if one of those hotel or resort properties which is part of the Hilton portfolio worldwide does not accept American Express cards as a form of payment? Does the member lose out on the earnings and a chance to reach the threshold to earn bonus points?


What I would probably do if I were in that situation is contact customer service representatives of both the Hilton Honors frequent guest loyalty program and American Express; explain what is the problem; and see if a solution is offered.

Although I believe that this issue is unfair to Clarkdkent, I am no Superman and do not have an answer to the question posed in this article — and that is where you come in: have you experienced a similar dilemma; or do you know someone who has? If so, what was the solution?

    Shouldn’t be too difficult to generate 4K in spending a different way so you can salvage the bonus. And $3500 will generate 10,500 chase/citi/altitude points, which may be worth even more. If you don’t have one, you should grab one and get another bonus. As far as the resort credit, it’s still there, you just have to find another place to use it within the year.

    I clicked through the hotel. The Hilton site now says they do accept AmEx..?

    This seems like nonsense. You can book this property through the Hilton app, which of course accepts Amex. In addition, he is saying it’s prepaid, but they haven’t charged it yet. So what? Many hotels don’t submit the charge until a week or even the day of the stay, even if it is pre-paid. That doesn’t mean they don’t accept amex, it just means this guy is simply not a very seasoned traveler.

    I think you have been hood-winked on this post. Please document one single Hilton property that does not accept Amex before you make this claim.

    Agreed that their website says they accept AMEX but if you contact MB directly (hotel front desk) they will let you know their AMEX terminals are still not set up.

    Several TripAdvisor reviews also mention the hotel not currently accepting Amex.
