Why 9D on a Delta Air Lines 767-300ER Aircraft is One of My Favorite Seats
I normally do not post trip reports, but I was assigned to seat 9D on a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft operated by Delta Air Lines on a recent flight from Seattle to Atlanta — and I truly enjoyed the entire experience.
The main reason why I liked seat 9D — which happens to configure to a completely flat bed, if you choose to snooze — is because I felt like I was seated in a semi-private “suite”: in addition to the window next to the seat, I had the bulkhead wall for the economy class cabin behind me; the curtain separating the economy class cabin from the Business Elite cabin was drawn closed; and there was a locked storage area directly across from me, as seen in the photograph below:
The configuration of some seats in the business class cabin on this particular aircraft is that the seat is next to the aisle; mine was against the window, which I preferred. I liked the idea of not having anyone sitting next to me: it was like having both an aisle seat and a window seat. That is the best of both worlds for me.
The seat was also equipped with a “massage” feature which felt like two lumbar supports alternating to press and rub against my lower back. This was one of a set of controls at the front edge of the wide armrest-cum-table which also had controls for the back of the seat and the leg rest, which you can control in any configuration between fully upright and the lie-flat position. I felt that the seat was a little too upright; but that is easily corrected to whatever position with which you are most comfortable.
The screen on the in-flight entertainment system was fairly large:
There was a tight space below the magazine pouch net which I assumed was a place to store your shoes in case you decide to remove them from your feet during the flight. There was plenty of leg room in front of me — as much as I needed. You could also store an item there as well — if your legs are not too long.
As you can see in the photograph on the right, there are several types of ports — including one for USB devices and an actual outlet to plug in your electronic devices.
Although I was in seat 9D — which was the last row in the Business Elite cabin and FEBO was in effect — I still had a choice between some type of cilantro chicken pasta meal and a hamburger for lunch. Although I have enjoyed the chicken pasta meals offered by Delta Air Lines in the past, I decided to brave the hamburger — despite the potential of what could go wrong by ordering a hamburger aboard an airplane during a flight.
I must say that the hamburger was hot and quite tasty — and FlyerTalk members generally seem to agree; it was juicy but not too moist and not dry, free of gristle, cooked to a temperature of medium well. The pickle was slightly reminiscent of the sour pickles one can buy in a Kosher delicatessen in New York, with a strong, pungent flavor. The condiments were fresh; and the cheddar cheese was sharp enough that I ate it — despite my dislike of eating cheese.
The potato salad — which had a hint of dill flavor in the dressing — would have been a winner if the potatoes were not too hard. I guess the potatoes were not cooked long enough. I ate everything anyway.
I would recommend seat 9D any day — although seat 9A on the opposite side of the aircraft is probably similar. One disadvantage of seat 9D is that you have virtually no chance of being the first passenger off of the aircraft, if you are in a hurry and must do so. That did not matter to me, however. I was happy.
