“I Heard The News Today, Oh Boy…”: The Death of David Bowie

lthough similar to the lyrics I read the news today, oh boy which starts the 1967 song A Day In The Life by The Beatles, the line I heard the news today, oh boy was sung in virtually the same tune in the 1975 song Young Americans by David Bowie, who died from cancer on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the age of 69.

A Creepy Trend — Or A Bizarre Coincidence?

Speaking of Young Americans, I wrote in this article on Friday,

…on a recent trip, the songs A Girl Like You by The Smithereens; Show Biz Kids by Steely Dan; and Young Americans by David Bowie seemed appropriate because the lyrics of each song mentions the place where I visited. Can you name that place?

The answer to that question is Washington, D.C.; and although I fulfilled a minor travel goal mentioned in the lyrics in Show Biz Kids, it was not long after that when David Bowie died — and I find that somewhat creepy.

Why?

Because it was not all that long after I wrote in this article on Saturday, March 28, 2015 — pertaining to an unfavorable review of a hotel property near the international airport which serves the greater Madrid metropolitan area — the following paragraph…

It was at this moment that I realized that I could no longer relate to the song Never Been to Spain, which was a hit song written by Hoyt Axton for Three Dog Night back in 1971; and I have been to England, Las Vegas, Oklahoma and Arizona but I have not been to Needles — but I digress.

…that Cory Wells — one of the three lead singers of Three Dog Night and an original member of the band — passed away at the age of 74.

I am beginning to have second thoughts about revealing other minor travel goals related to lyrics from songs in a feeble attempt to perhaps that will help prolong the lives of some singers; and although David Bowie did not sing the song Show Biz Kids, Donald Fagen of Steely Dan did — and he was recently arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife, according to this article written by Shayna Jacobs of the New York Daily News.

At least nothing adverse happened to John Fogerty, whom I saw live in concert on Saturday, May 9, 2015 with a fellow member of FlyerTalk; and I believe Donny Osmond — whom I consider one of my nemeses — is doing well…

…to my knowledge, at least

Tribute to David Bowie

I typically do not pay tribute to people whom I have never met — aside from the passing of fellow frequent fliers known on FlyerTalk and InsideFlyer — so I will defer you to this thoughtful article as written by Ric Garrido of Loyalty Traveler. Curious, I asked Ric during breakfast at the Washington Hilton last month why he chose the screen name satori on FlyerTalk; and he reveals the reason in the article which pays a touching tribute to David Bowie.

May David Bowie rest in peace.

  1. Dom says:

It’s incorrect to write that David Bowie “reportedly died from cancer.” He died, reportedly from cancer. or he died from cancer.

    1. Brian Cohen says:

I removed the word reportedly altogether from the article, Dom — especially as the general cause of his death has since been confirmed.

      Thank you for the correction.
